In July, McCain Promised His VP Would Appear On Larry King

Earlier today, ThinkProgress noted that since becoming Sen. John McCain's (R-AZ) running mate, Gov. Sarah Palin has rarely taken questions from the press. In July, during an interview with CNN's Larry King, McCain assured King that his running mate would appear on King's show shorty after his announcement

GOP uses 9/11 in video

All Americans should be outraged at the blatant propaganda the GOP feed our nation last night. In what can only be described as offensive, the GOP aired a video tribute to 9/11, and that tribute was nothing more then footage of buildings burning, people jumping out of windows, terrorists waving guns in the air, it was something that never should have been shown, nor created.

WARNING: This video is very graphic, and may not be appropriate for children.

The facts don't lie, but Palin does

Here is an extensive list of the lies that Palin told last night, and though this list is from the Obama campaign, the entire media is out there with pretty much the same content. Basically what she said and what she does are two entirely different things, maybe that is why she still isn't giving any interviews.

PALIN: "In fact, I told Congress -- I told Congress, 'Thanks, but no thanks,' on that bridge to nowhere."

REALITY: PALIN WAS FOR THE BRIDGE TO NOWHERE BEFORE SHE WAS AGAINST IT.

October 2006" Palin Supported Bridge To Nowhere. In 2006, Palin was asked, "Would you continue state funding for the proposed Knik Arm and Gravina Island bridges?" She responded, "Yes. I would like to see Alaska's infrastructure projects built sooner rather than later. The window is now--while our congressional delegation is in a strong position to assist." [Anchorage, 10/22/06, republished 08/29/08]

2006: Palin: Don't Allow "Spinmeisters" To Turn Bridge To Nowhere Project "Into Something That’s So Negative." "Part of my agenda is making sure that Southeast is heard. That your projects are important. That we go to bat for Southeast when we’re up against federal influences that aren't in the best interest of Southeast.' She cited the widespread negative attention focused on the Gravina Island crossing project. 'We need to come to the defense of Southeast Alaska when proposals are on the table like the bridge and not allow the spinmeisters to turn this project or any other into something that’s so negative,' Palin said." [Ketchikan Daily News, 10/2/06]

Dow tumbles day after Palin speech

And on the eve of the McCain speech the Dow tumbles more then 300 points. Will we hear anything from the RNC on how the policies of the Republicans have harmed our economy? I doubt it, but you will hear why Obama is so bad for our country.

McCain can run on his experience, but he can't hide from the experience this nation has had to endure under eight years of a Republican administration that has destroyed our middle class, an administration that McCain has been in lock step with 90 percent of the time.

Health care. Good wages. Affordable college education. These are the issues that Americans want to hear about, and I can almost guarantee that McCain isn't going to tell America how he plans to change one thing.

Maverick, no, old, worn out nag, yes.

Comparing this whole RNC convention to what we had just a week ago couldn't be more clear, and once again, here is our message, compare it to what you have heard, and what you will hear tonight.

Seems the red meat hate filled speech Palin gave last night is a big flop with independents and moderates:

George Lentz, 66, Southfield independent: "I was completely underwhelmed. She was a Republican novelty act with a sophomoric script. It was not even a speech I would expect for someone running for the local PTA, much less for vice president."

Update:

Here is another sampling of independents:

But then another woman added: "Once she started mudslinging, I thought, it's the same old crap as other politicians. McCain used her to get the women's vote. And she's using McCain."

"Thank you," another woman responded. "That really upset me; there was no need for that. It was snippy."

The unmarried group also voiced similar objections to the harsh, partisan edge of Palin's remarks. "I'm not impressed with her at all as a person," one said, citing her "finger pointing" and general sarcasm after the group had generally agreed that she was a talented public speaker.

Palin Vetting: DNC has the goods

When Palin decided to run for Governor 18 months ago, the DNC complied a backgrounder on her, here is a link to some of what they found. Including her use of her office as mayor to run her Lt. Governor bid. The GOP wants us to judge Palin on "character," what type of character does someone have when they abuse their public office to run a campaign?

USED PUBLIC FUNDS FOR POLITICAL GAIN

In her 2002 Lt. Governor bid, Mayor Palin used city employees, telephones, computers, fax machines for campaign fundraising and literature. On her candidate registration form, she used her City Hall fax number, and her mayoral e-mail address. Records show that Wasilla city property was used to contact supporters, donors, media contacts, and media purchasing. [Anchorage Daily News, 7/21/06]

Democrats did more of a job checking her background then McCain did, how anyone in their right mind can continue to allow Palin to run for VP is beyond me.

Palin just gets worse and worse

And truthfully, though the following is from a Republican blog, the sentiments are exactly right. Palin has flown in the father of her 17 year old's baby.

The media is not supposed to talk about this, but where, where is the sense in this woman? Here is what a Republican is saying:

Perhaps I'm focusing on an irrelevant issue, but the presence, or non-presence, of Johnston on the stage tonight strikes me as important. It's one thing for delegates to be understanding and compassionate about the fix these two teenagers have gotten themselves into. It's another to actually celebrate it. And, given what we've learned in the last few days, if Johnston is up on stage with his girlfriend and the Palin family, and Republicans are wildly cheering, it will certainly look like they are celebrating this situation.

I don't usually engage in these scenarios, but I'll do it here. If the Obamas had a 17 year-old daughter who was unmarried and pregnant by a tough-talking black kid, my guess is if that they all appeared onstage at a Democratic convention and the delegates were cheering wildly, a number of conservatives might be discussing the issue of dysfunctional black families.

Is Palin in her right mind? She, and McCain are USING her child and the situation they find themselves in for their own POLITICAL reasons, here is video of the young man arriving:

More from TPM:

Let's be clear about what's happening here. Overwhelmingly, reporters are pressing eminently reasonable questions -- her role in troopergate, her lack of experience, her connections to the AIP, her history of earmarking and lobbyists, etc. Meanwhile, the McCain campaign is going absolutely non-stop about Palin's daughter. Budget Fight May Lead to Saner Process

The budget fight has no logical end in sight. The Republicans are proposing to decimate our state's health, safety, and education, with their intransigent position on revenue. The good news (if there is any in this fight) is that the Democratic caucus is holding firm and protecting our state from the Republican cuts that even the Governor calls irresponsible. Our new Senate Majority Leader, Senator Darrell Steinberg, is showing great leadership and now pledges to bring this process before the voters in 2009. Maybe California will finally go back to majority rule, like 47 other states. (Only Arkansas and Rhode Island require 2/3 of the legislature to support a budget.)

McCain on vetting of VP: "It's basically a Google."

Man oh man is the GOP in a bad position, basically a lose, lose no matter how you look at it. First of all it is painfully clear that McCain made his decision on Palin with little to no background vetting.

And then the LA Times gives us:

One Republican strategist with close ties to the campaign described the candidate's closest supporters as "keeping their fingers crossed" in hopes that additional information does not force McCain to revisit the decision. According to this Republican, who would discuss internal campaign strategizing only on condition of anonymity, the McCain team used little more than a Google Internet search as part of a rushed effort to review Palin's potential pitfalls. Just over a week ago, Palin was not on McCain's short list of potential running mates, the Republican said.

This really isn't about Palin at all, it is about McCain's ability, or lack thereof, to make an informed decision. Whether it is McCain's attempt to get into the middle of an international crisis (Georgia), or his VP pick, it is becoming increasingly clear that McCain's temperament is ill suited to commander in chief.

My god, who in the hell VETS a person for the second most important job in our nation based almost entirely on a Google search??????????????????????????

The lose lose? Getting rid of Palin shows that they made a huge mistake, keeping Palin on the ticket, shows they made a huge mistake.

Palin sought earmarks as Mayor

Today we learn more about John McCain's VP pick Palin, and I am wondering why John McCain didn't care enough about our country to vet Palin properly.

First of all MSNBC has an article by Paul Kane of the Washington Post that derails McCain's assertions that Palin is someone who is against earmarks:

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin employed a lobbying firm to secure almost $27 million in federal earmarks for a town of 6,700 residents while she was its mayor, according to an analysis by an independent government watchdog group.

There was $500,000 for a youth shelter, $1.9 million for a transportation hub, $900,000 for sewer repairs, and $15 million for a rail project -- all intended to benefit Palin's town, Wasilla, located about 45 miles north of Anchorage.

In introducing Palin as his running mate on Friday, Sen. John McCain cast her as a compatriot in his battle against wasteful federal spending. McCain, the Republican presidential candidate, hailed Palin as a politician "with an outstanding reputation for standing up to special interests and entrenched bureaucracies -- someone who has fought against corruption and the failed policies of the past, someone who's stopped government from wasting taxpayers' money."

And then we have Eugene Robinson, Washington Post, who tells us:

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Has anyone noticed that Sarah Palin's central claim to political fame is a fraud? She represents herself as a fiscal conservative who abhors pork-barrel projects and said no thanks to the "Bridge to Nowhere" -- a $398 million span that would have linked Ketchikan, Alaska, to its airport across the Tongass Narrows. But as mayor of Wasilla (pop. 9,780), she hired a Washington lobbyist to bring home the bacon. And as a candidate for governor just two years ago, she supported both the Ketchikan bridge and the congressional earmark that would have paid most of its cost.

I know, we're not supposed to pay attention to such inconvenient details. We're supposed to be dazzled by how unaffected she is, how plain-spoken, how "genuine."

And this is the best quote from Robinson's article:

The other thing we learned about McCain is that he is willing to take an enormous gamble based on limited information. He only met Palin once before summoning her for a final interview. He realized he needed to shake up the presidential race, and that's what he did. But we are reminded, if we did not realize it before, that the three things not to expect from a McCain presidency are caution, prudence and a willingness to always put the nation's interests above his own.

The bottom line is simple: McCain had an opportunity to show our nation what type of a decision maker he is, and he showed us alright, he showed us that he shoots from the hip and asks questions later. Can we really afford McCain's "maverick" leadership? I think not.

Was Palin ever vetted by the McCain campaign?

The NYT has a breaking story on the vetting of Sarah Palin, and quite frankly there are more questions then answers at this point.

From the NYT:

With time running out — and as Mr. McCain discarded two safer choices, Gov. Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota and former Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts, as too predictable — he turned to Ms. Palin. He had his first face-to-face interview with her on Thursday and offered her the job moments later. Advisers to Mr. Pawlenty and another of the finalists on Mr. McCain's list described an intensive vetting process for those candidates that lasted one to two months.

They didn't seriously consider her until four or five days from the time she was picked, before she was asked, maybe the Thursday or Friday before,” said a Republican close to the campaign. "This was really kind of rushed at the end, because John didn’t get what he wanted. He wanted to do Joe or Ridge."

And this:

People familiar with the process said Ms. Palin had responded to a standard form with more than 70 questions. Although The Washington Post quoted advisers to Mr. McCain on Sunday as saying Ms. Palin had been subjected to an F.B.I. background check, an F.B.I. official said Monday the bureau did not vet potential candidates and had not known of her selection until it was made public.

The President of the United States appoints hundreds of people who end up running our country, who represent our nation to the world, who run our military, and it is alarming to see McCain demonstrate for us how he would "vet" those he could appoint.

The one way McCain can show his ability to lead this country is by his actions, and his judgment in picking his Vice Presidential running mate shows some of the worst judgment ever seen by a candidate for president. Can we really afford to elect a man who has shown so little regard for the process of picking his running mate?

And, though this is an official Democratic Blog, I have to tell you that as an American I am now convinced that a McCain presidency would make George Bush look like George Washington.

Compare this mess of McCain's to our Vice Presidential pick, Joe Biden. Need I say more?

Imagine my surprise when the new Chair of the SVGOP made this comment yesterday:

"For all the Reagan Democrats who had supported Hillary, this decision clinches it for the McCain ticket," Mullen said. "Having Palin locks these women in. Women are looking for a positive role model, not the angry and bitter female politicians we've seen so much of lately."

Angry and bitter female politicians? Does Mr. Mullen think that Dolores Carr, the elected Republican District Attorney of Santa Clara County is a "bitter and angry" female politician? Or how about Laurie Smith, elected Republican Sheriff of Santa Clara County? How about the rest of the few Republican women who hold elected office in our county?

But then again, if I were a local Republican, man or woman, chances are that I would be bitter and angry given the leadership of the SVGOP.

Who is Palin? A primer for your reference

On Friday we learned that John McCain had picked Governor Sarah Palin to be his running mate. Though he had only met her once in person, McCain has determined through watching her from afar that Palin is qualified to be second in command of our nation.

Who is this woman? The governor of one of the least populated states in our nation, she has been in office 18 months, and before that she was mayor of a town that had less then 10,000 people. She has never been to Iraq, as a matter of fact she had never traveled outside our country until 2007.

Here is a link for you to save as your "Sarah Palin" primer, it has an initial 45 plus points on her, from her stand against birth control (yes, that is not a typo, she is against birth control), to her current scandal called "Troopergate," to her not knowing what the Vice President does.

Sarah Palin is a dream come true for the hard core fundamentalists in our country, and her views are a nightmare for the rest of our nation.

Conservative Andrew Sullivan : "The hope we confess"

Andrew Sullivan is a conservative who has written a powerful and exact analysis of Obama's speech last night. Here is a small excerpt, do yourself a favor and read the entire article because it is worth every word.

He starts with:

It was a liberal speech, more unabashedly, unashamedly liberal than any Democratic acceptance speech since the great era of American liberalism. But it made the case for that liberalism - in the context of the decline of the American dream, and the rise of cynicism and the collapse of cultural unity. His ability to portray that liberalism as a patriotic, unifying, ennobling tradition makes him the most lethal and remarkable Democratic figure since John F Kennedy.

And it gets better.

McCain's campaign speechless

I believe he's also informally working with the McCain campaign this cycle, as a sort of outside advisor.

Chuck Todd said below he thought Obama's speech had left the McCain camp speechless. My own take was that the tone of the statement from the McCain campaign was like someone who'd had the wind knocked out of them.

In that context, Castellanos' response was very telling. He made no attempt to put the speech in any positive context for McCain. Midway through this clip he sounds like an Obama surrogate. And he concludes by saying that "whoever didn't get picked for Republican VP today may be a lucky Republican."
