Welcome M A L I A C O H E N, newly elected CA State Board of Equalization member, District 2 (Oregon border to Santa Barbara). The Dean Democratic Club of Silicon Valley proudly endorsed her candidacy. This is your chance to get to know this dynamic public servant!
Born and raised in San Francisco, Ms. Cohen has been a SF Board of Supervisors member since 2011 and is currently its president. With degrees from Fisk U and Carnegie Mellon and a background in banking regulation and monetary policy, she chaired the SF Budget and Finance Committee, leading the effort to develop a balanced budget, and was also vice chair of the SF Transportation Authority Finance committee. She was a member of the SF Employee Retirement System, which manages a $24 billion pension fund; as president of its Retirement Board she led successful efforts to divest from thermal coal investments. A champion of public health policy, Ms .Cohen was lead author of SF’s sugar-sweetened beverage tax, which passed by 62%; she also introduced legislation restricting the sale of flavored tobacco in SF. Ms. Cohen will discuss changes at the Board of Equalization and what she has accomplished in San Francisco, and will also give us some of her ideas moving forward.
