{"id":15709,"date":"2022-12-02T18:32:07","date_gmt":"2022-12-03T02:32:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sccdp.org\/?p=15709"},"modified":"2022-12-12T13:45:18","modified_gmt":"2022-12-12T21:45:18","slug":"city-council-vacancies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sccdp.org\/index.php\/2022\/12\/02\/city-council-vacancies\/","title":{"rendered":"City Council Vacancies"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Earlier this week, we released a <strong><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/SCCDP-press-release-re-council-vacancies.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">statement<\/a><\/strong> urging the San Jos\u00e9 City Council to fill the Council vacancies for District 8 and District 10 by appointment, allowing voters to choose their representatives in the upcoming regular election cycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We need <strong>your voice<\/strong> advocating for an appointment process at the Council meeting this coming Monday, December 5, at 5pm.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Voters passed Measure B this June because San Jose residents overwhelmingly believe that democracy is best served when more people vote, not fewer.&nbsp; It\u2019s time once again to take a stand for greater representation and participation and against low turnout elections.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Filling the vacancies by appointment would ensure that residents in District 8 and District 10 have continuity of representation, and that the new council can get to work on pressing priorities such as homelessness, public safety, and filling almost 1000 city vacancies.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The alternative would be to waste upwards of $10 million on a low-turnout, special election dominated by developers and other wealthy interests and voters who do not fully represent the residents of the districts.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Politicians shouldn\u2019t choose who gets to vote for them by scheduling an election at a time when they know that many voters, busy with the struggles they face in their daily lives, won\u2019t vote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s get to work.
