Resolution Supporting County Purchase of South County Hospitals

Return to all resolutions

WHEREAS the private owner of St. Louise Regional Hospital in Gilroy, DePaul Health Center in Morgan Hill, and O’Connor Hospital in San Jose has filed for bankruptcy, potentially leaving residents of Gilroy, Morgan Hill, and San Martin with no access to emergency and other medical services in their own communities if these facilities were to close; and

WHEREAS Santa Clara County has stepped forward as the sole entity willing to purchase and continue to operate these facilities, the sale having been approved by the bankruptcy court over the objection of the State Attorney General but the sale being at risk of potentially being delayed and derailed by the State Attorney General’s appeal of the decision of the bankruptcy court; and

WHEREAS Santa Clara County’s purchase of these hospitals would relieve strain on the county’s already crowded hospital system and ensure continued service to all residents, including those who are low income and vulnerable, regardless of their ability to pay;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Santa Clara County Democratic Party calls on the State Attorney General to withdraw his appeal and allow the sale of St. Louise Regional Hospital in Gilroy, DePaul Health Center in Morgan Hill, and O’Connor Hospital in San Jose to Santa Clara County to proceed without state-imposed restrictions; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution will be forwarded to the State Attorney General, the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors, and Members of the State Assembly and State Senate representing Santa Clara County.
