A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING A GENERAL PLAN AMENDMENT TO PROHIBIT NEW OIL AND GAS EXPLORATION IN SANTA CLARA COUNTY

WHEREAS, the State of California, including Santa Clara County, is suffering an unprecedented extreme drought and water resources are declining at an historic rate requiring all citizens to reduce their usage by 30 percent, and the fact that oil and gas exploration requires thousands of gallons of potable water and
WHEREAS, Santa Clara County lies within one of the most seismically active areas in the State of California, with the San Andreas Fault to the West and the Calaveras and Hayward faults to the East, and there is strong evidence that oil and gas exploration has caused water contamination as well as earthquakes in other parts of the United States and
WHEREAS, local communities and Environmental Groups may exercise political power while maintaining collaboration with local government agencies regarding the environment, climate change and the protection of the community’s water resources
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Santa Clara County Democratic Party urges the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors to remove permitting oil and gas exploration and or drilling from the Land Use Section of the County General Plan.
THEREFORE BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution will be transmitted to the appropriate City, County, State and Federal elected officials.
