Saving Democracy

Join us on October 1 at 1 PM as Ohio voting rights champion DAVID PEPPER returns to the Democratic Volunteer Center, with real-world solutions for everyone fighting for democracy!

David’s latest book Saving Democracy: A User’s Manual for Every American describes how we all can and must play a role in saving democracy at this fraught time. In this special DVC webinar, David will speak to the concrete steps individuals and groups can take and offer case studies and best practices that have worked elsewhere. He’ll explain how all of us on all levels of the pro-democracy side, from national political leaders to grassroots activists to everyday Americans, must switch to offense, stay on offense, and win on offense – immediately, and everywhere.

About the speaker: David Pepper is a lawyer, writer, political activist, former elected official, and adjunct professor. He served as the Chairman of the Ohio Democratic Party between 2015 and 2021. In that role, he was engaged in numerous fights and extensive litigation over voter suppression and election laws in the Buckeye State.

Celebration of Life for Nancy Pyle

Please join us this Friday, August 11th, 5pm-7pm, Almaden Community Center, 6445 Camden Ave, San Jose, to celebrate the life of former San Jose City Council member Nancy Pyle.

Nancy represented District 10 on the San Jose City Council from 2004-2012. Prior to that, Nancy served as a San Jose Evergreen Community College District (SJECCD) Trustee and had a long career as a teacher and as a lobbyist representing the SJUSD. Her obituary is available HERE. More recently, she served as President of the Democratic Club at the Villages, which grew in size and activity under her leadership.

Nancy was a friend to many of us in the Democratic Party and activist community and she will be greatly missed.

Meet and Greet with Robert Rivas

I am so honored to be co-hosting, with Supervisor Susan Ellenberg and others, a special brunch meet and greet with our newly inducted Speaker of the California State Assembly, Robert Rivas, on Saturday, August 19th.

Representing portions of Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, San Benito, and Monterey counties, Speaker Rivas is the proud grandson of immigrant farmworkers. Through his lived experiences, he understands the value of opportunity for our current and future generations. Speaker Rivas was unanimously elected by the Assembly Democratic Caucus as the 71st Speaker of the California State Assembly late last year and was inducted earlier this summer.

Don’t miss this chance to connect with one of our state’s prominent leaders!

Date: Saturday, August 19
Time: 9:30-11:00am
Location: available upon RSVP

This is a wonderful opportunity to meet Speaker Rivas, a member of our Santa Clara County state delegation, in person, engage in thoughtful discussions, and learn more about his vision for California’s future. Whether you’re a community member, business leader, or advocate, your presence is valuable and appreciated.
